Robert Devereux
I was born
in the woods of Maine in 1976. After graduating from high school, I moved
to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for college. I attended Carnegie Mellon and
graduated with a degree in Psychology (although I spent some of the time
studying anthropology and electrical engineering).
I began playing guitar in high school. Shortly after starting on
guitar, I began working with computer music. In the beginning, I was
mostly influenced by hard rock and metal bands. During college, I
expanded my listening to include many genres (such as jazz, folk, film
scores, experimental music, progressive rock, and various world music
styles).
Rather than limit myself to one style, I decided to work on music that
could incorporate any influences, without any constraints of style.
Anything, from Tuvan throat singing to thrash guitar, from folk to techno,
could be used, as long as the result is good.
With this philosophy in mind, I recorded a few demos for friends.
However, I did not feel ready to distribute them. I preferred to work on
my composition, rather than release music that was not up to my standards
of quality.
I did have a few MP3s of music that were up to my standards, but not
enough for a real demo. Jeff VanderMeer came across one of these MP3s.
He suggested doing collaborative project - music for the city of
Ambergris. This was the start of Fungicide.
Besides working on Fungicide, I have been working with filmmaker
Elizabeth Cromwell to provide scores to her short films.
